Viking Lamellar Belt, from Gotland
Viking Lamellar Belt based on Gotlandic Examples
Leather with Brass Fittings, various sizes
This Viking Age lamellar belt is modelled on archeological finds from the Swedish island of Gotland. Although it is not an exact replica of a specific artefact, it is based upon several original Gotlandic examples and has been kept as historically authentic as possible. Similar Viking belts or belt parts have also been found - among others - in Birka/Björko (Sweden) and in the Baltic region (Estonia, Latvia). Such belts were usually fastened with a loop ("knotted") so that the strap end hung freely on the front.
This approx. 3 cm wide lamellar belt is crafted from sturdy, 2 mm thick vegetable tanned leather and is adorned with brass fittings with copper accents. The main waist piece is fitted with brass platelets (so-called lamellae or lames, hence the name) which are riveted onto the leather.
