Belt Buckle, Midgard Serpent in Urnes Style
Together with Hel and the wolf Fenrir, the Midgard Serpent (also called Jormungandr or World Serpent) is one the world's three tormentors in Germanic mythology. Jormungandr lives in the depths of the great sea that surrounds Midgard. His body is so exceptionally large that he encircles the entire earth und grasps the end of this tail in his maw. When he awakens and thrashes the ocean, great floods devastate the world of the mortals. At the same time, the serpent biting his own tail is a pregnant symbol of the unity and eternal recurrence of all things. On a spiritual level it also bespeaks deeply hidden forces that unfold when the time comes and can now and again be channeled and taken advantage of. By the third encounter between Thor and Jormungand at the Ragnarök Thor succeeds in striking the Midgard Serpent dead with his hammer Mjölnir.
