Child's Hospitaller Tabard / Surcoat Black/Natural with Cross
This calf-length child's surcoat is made from  cotton fabric. It is straight in cut and has side slits from the waist down over. It also has a shorter slit at the centre front and back. The cross of the Hospitaller is printed on the chest.
The surcoat or tabard  was popular in the 12th century and was worn by knights over their plate or chain mail armour. It was primarily designed to protect its wearer from direct sunlight on the battlefield, and the various colour combinations were a  means
of distinguishing their own fighters from the enemies on the battlefield.

Knights of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (Latin name: Ordo Hospitalis sancti Johannis Ierosolimitani) or Knights of St. John of the Spital of Jerusalem were referred to as Hospitallers. This order was founded after the conquest of Jerusalem by the army of the First Crusade in 1099. The Knights of this Order were also referred to as Hospitaller's. In 1306, after the sinking of the Crusader states, the order first moved to Rhodes, then finally to Malta in 1530. Today, this order is therefore called Malterserorden.
