German Frog Mouth Helm 1.6mm Steel
German Frog-Mouth Helm, circa 1500 1.6 mm steel
An authentic replica of a southern German Stechhelm (jousting helmet) from the early 16th century.
The frog-mouth helmet shape evolved from the great helm (or bucket helmet) in the early 15th century. It was worn only in tournaments along with the Stechzeug (jousting armour).
The helmet is composed of a domed top plate with contoured ribs, a front panel tapering in a ship's bow-like manner and a back panel with offset, ribbed upper section. All three parts are connected with ornamental, historically accurate brass rivets. The side vents at the ear level do not only facilitate hearing but also allow for easier breathing. The inside top of the helmet is padded with thick canvas. As the helm is equipped with pre-drilled holes and a rear bracket, it can be mounted onto a cuirass.
A rare rendition of German armour smithing artistry.
