Italian Rapier, 16th Century
This is a replica of an Italian rapier with curved hilt from the 16th Century.
By the end of the Middle Ages combat techniques had changed so therefore blades became longer and smaller and the common sword had now been replaced by the more elegant rapier.
During the Renaissance the wearing of a rapier showed a gentleman’s status symbol. Higher nobles like counts or barons wore longer blades and lower noblemen shorter blades.
The hilt of this rapier is made of animal bones.
