Roman Beneficiarius Lance
The beneficiarii were visible from the first century AD, and carried out various tasks within the Roman Empire. Within the legions they were drafted from the Principales, the non-commissioned officers. Apart from their normal service the beneficarii were stationed on the external and important internal borders of the realm, where they, for example, controlled the movement of goods.
This lance was their most relevant sign, which made them recognisable from afar.
